Penn State named partner of Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State has been named an academic partner of the new Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy.

Led by the Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition, the institute is comprised of nearly 200 academic and industry partners that are focused on accelerating the development and adoption of advanced sensors, data analytics and controls in manufacturing, while reducing the cost of these technologies and improving the efficiency of U.S. manufacturing.

Professor Soundar Kumara wrote the proposal that led to Penn State’s partnership with the institute.

According to the White House press release, the Los Angeles-based institute brings more than $140 million in public and private investment from leading universities and manufacturers to develop smart sensors for use in advanced manufacturing.

After a decade of decline from 2000 to 2010, the U.S. manufacturing sector has added more than 800,000 jobs since February 2010 and remains more competitive for jobs and investment today compared to recent decades.

The Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute is the ninth manufacturing hub awarded by the Obama Administration.
