Matching Process

After both the student and the mentor registration is complete, students will be sent a link to review the available mentors. Information about the potential mentors include graduation year, degree(s), industry and job track, current company, current role, former roles, proximity to Penn State, hobbies and likelihood of attending a student/mentor mixer on campus.

Once the student has reviewed the list of potential mentors, they select a mentor.

NOTE:Mentor selection is first-come, first-serve. This means that once a mentor is selected by a student, they disappear from the list of remaining mentors. Students are encouraged to act promptly in reviewing and selecting a mentor to have the best chances of finding a mentor who matches his/her interests or areas of expertise desired.

Once the student selects a mentor, the match is reviewed by the mentoring committee and the student and mentor are sent an email with each other’s contact information.

It is the mentor’s responsibility to contact the student within two weeks after the contact information is shared; however, if the student is comfortable making this initial contact, then they are encouraged to do so.

During the initial meeting, the student and mentor should discuss their backgrounds, interests and professional goals. They should also consider what types of goals should be set for the duration of the mentoring relationship.

After the initial meeting. If the student and/or the mentor do not feel the match is appropriate, contact PSIMESmentoring@gmail.com. A PSIMES mentoring committee member will then attempt to find an alternate mentor for the student.
