Center for e-Design to host industry workshop for new Penn State site

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Center for e-Design is holding a strategic planning workshop with an open invitation to potential industry and government partners for the center’s new Penn State site June 8-10 at The Nittany Lion Inn.
Workshop attendees will learn about the Center for e-Design, potential projects presented by the Penn State team and engage in open dialogue to share their most pressing problems and priorities. Laboratory tours will also be provided.
Directed by Janis Terpenny, professor and head of the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, the Center for e-Design is a National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center comprised of eight universities that work with nearly 30 industry and agency members.
The center develops new collaborative infrastructures that integrate and enable intelligent decision-making and processes throughout the supply chain, and are aimed at all stakeholders (both small- and medium-sized enterprises, as well as original equipment manufacturers) involved in the design-manufacture-sustainment value stream.
Penn State is the eighth university partner, joining Brigham Young University, University of Illinois, Iowa State University, Oregon State University, University of Buffalo, University of Massachusetts and Wayne State University.
Penn State brings expertise from a wide range of disciplines within engineering, including industrial and manufacturing engineering, mechanical and nuclear engineering, architectural engineering and engineering design, as well as input from the Colleges of Arts and Architecture and Information Sciences and Technology and Smeal College of Business.
Core strengths of the Penn State team include crowd-based design, big data analytics, design theory and innovation, collaborative design, design optimization, additive manufacturing and model-based enterprise.
Labs and centers at Penn State that have partnered with the Center on e-Design include the Applied Research Lab, the Center for Research in Design and Innovation, the Center for Innovative Materials Processing through Direct Digital Decomposition, the Factory for Advanced Manufacturing Education and the Learning Factory.
