Humphreys earns engineering alumni society's Rising Star Award

3/21/2016

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Paul Humphreys, assistant to the department head in the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering (IME), has been named a recipient of the 2016 Penn State Engineering Alumni Society (PSEAS) Rising Star Award.

Melissa Showalter, administrative support assistant in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics, was named the other recipient of the award.

The Rising Star Award recognizes individuals who have worked within the college less than two years and have shown great promise in his/her positions while demonstrating exceptional job performance.

Individuals are nominated and those nominations are reviewed by a committee, appointed by the dean, which is comprised of PSEAS representatives and the director of alumni relations.

Humphreys joined the IME staff in January 2015 as the assistant to Interim Department Head Harriet Nembhard, professor of industrial engineering and director of the Penn State Center for Integrated Healthcare Delivery Systems.

Janis Terpenny was appointed as the Peter and Angel Dal Pezzo Chair and Department Head for IME in September 2015 and Humphreys has been providing support to her since that time.

His responsibilities within the department include: coordinating the logistics for meetings of the department’s advisory committees and alumni group; supporting the promotion and tenure process under Terpenny’s direction; coordinating the IME alumni-student mentorship program; coordinating travel and activity itinerary of the department head and faculty candidates; and assembling informational packets for departmental visitors. Humphreys is also the direct supervisor of the staff assistant in the main IME office.

Prior to coming to Penn State, Humphreys was an administrative officer with the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) of the U.S. Department of Defense for four years. In this role, he was awarded the DISA Enterprise Services Directorate Executive Officer of the Year Award in 2011.

Before his service with DISA, Humphreys flew for a variety of air medical programs as a helicopter pilot, serving with Air Methods Corporation, EraMed Corporation, Keystone Helicopters and Air Evac EMS, Inc. He earned his Airline Transport Pilot License after having been a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Coast Guard for 20 years, and retired in 2003 as a Lieutenant Commander.

All PSEAS award winners will be formally recognized and presented with their awards during a reception on April 27 at the Nittany Lion Inn.
