UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Professor Emeritus A. “Ravi” Ravindran, a world-renowned expert on operations research, is an editor of a new book that provides guidance on decision-making in business operations.

Big Data Analytics Using Multiple Criteria Decision-Making Models (Operations Research Series), published by CRC Press, LLC, provides an in-depth analysis of big data and business analytics as they relate to the specific subfield of multiple criteria decision-making.

Ravindran, who retired over the summer, is a Provost’s Emeritus Faculty Teaching Scholar in the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Penn State this semester. He has nearly 50 years of experience in academia — including 30 years at Penn State — and eight books published on various operations research-related topics and methods.

The focus of the book is on multiple criteria decision-making in the context of using big data generated by the digital revolution. Ravindran and the other editors offer new approaches in the context of big data and business analytics by providing new models and methods.

Ravindran co-edited the book with Ramakrishnan Ramanthan from the University of Bedfordshire (Luton, U.K.) and Muthu Mathirajan from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), (Bangalore, India.) Together they examine the field of modeling-based tools for business analytics, with an exclusive focus on multiple criteria decision-making within the domain of operations research.

The book includes an introduction to big data and business analytics, as well as challenges and opportunities for developing multiple criteria decision models in the era of big data.
