Penn State Smeal's Russell Barton named distinguished professor

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Russell Barton, Penn State Smeal College of Business senior associate dean for research and faculty, has been named distinguished professor of supply chain and information systems.

Barton, who has a courtesy appointment as a professor within the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, joined the Smeal faculty in 2002 after 11 years in industrial and manufacturing engineering. He is beginning his fifth year as senior associate dean at Smeal.

He is responsible for the general academic and research strategies of the college as well as strategies associated with international collaborative relationships. He oversees the Ph.D. program, research funding and budgets, faculty development, all academic departments and research centers, and the office of international business. He chairs the executive committee, which is composed of department heads of all academic units in the college.

Barton is widely published, with research on the interface between applied statistics and product design and manufacturing. He is currently an associate editor for Operations Research and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications Journal of Management Mathematics.

He holds a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Princeton and master’s and doctoral degrees in operations research from Cornell.

The title of distinguished professor was established by the Office of the President to recognize a select group of professors with exceptional accomplishments in teaching, research and service.

Barton becomes Smeal’s fourth distinguished professor, joining Gary Lilien (management science), Wayne DeSarbo (marketing), and Linda Treviño (organizational behavior and ethics).
