Alumni society announces annual award winners

4/11/2015

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Society (PSIMES) announced Andris Freivalds, professor in the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, as the winner of its annual Faculty Appreciation Award and Caitlin Zankowski (2010, bachelor of science) as the recipient of its Graduate of the Last Decade (G.O.L.D.) Award.

In his 35 years with Penn State, Freivalds initiated the human factors/ergonomics engineering program with graduate courses in biomechanics, work psychology and modeling of the musculoskeletal system. He also developed the department’s Benjamin W. Niebel Work Design Lab, which focuses on human factors research. Freivalds teaches both undergraduate and graduate industrial engineering students and is the author of two textbooks and numerous publications on human factors and work design.

After graduating from Penn State, Zankowski joined GE Transportation in the Operations Management Program, a two-year rotational program focused on developing future supply chain leaders within the company. In 2013, her role was expanded to sourcing integration and commodity leader overseeing the integration activities for two international businesses. Since 2014, Zankowski has been been a product manager in GE's commercial global locomotive organization.

The PSIMES awards were presented at the annual Industrial Engineering Banquet on April 10 at the Nittany Lion Inn.

PSIMES, an affiliate program group of the Penn State Engineering Alumni Society, works to stimulate the continued interest and professional development of all graduates of the Marcus department and acts as an informal advisory board to the head of the department. The group strives to promote fellowship and communication among industrial engineering alumni, faculty and students order to actively work for the improvement of the department and the College of Engineering.
